In order to learn about local forestry and meet local forest owners an excursion to Austrian steep terrain forestry was organised during the Three Rights Holders’ Group’s planning conference in Graz, Austria, 9th to 13th October 2011.

Impressively built forest roads in the hill side

On the first stop the participants in the G3 planning conference and IFFA annual meeting was presented cable crane harvesting in the area close to Graz. Helped by cable crane, harvester and cutters with chain saw, the wood was efficiently harvested in the very steep hills. The Austrians skills and technology managed to secure economic surplus even when the hills were steep and the forest not of superior quality and price.

During another stop the Austrian foresters and government officials presented road building in steep hills as the prerequisite for harvesting in steep terrain in an efficient and economic matter. The roads in the hillside were built impressively quickly with excavator and pecking devices.
